This appletini is a delicious, refreshing, flavourful, light and delicate cocktail. It’s perfect for the upcoming spring and summer season.

Both the cocktail and mocktail include fresh apple and ginger, lemon juice, simple syrup and apple juice. While the alcoholic version is made with vodka, the non-alcoholic version uses cold chamomile tea. You can even substitute some vodka 1:1 for chamomile to lighten the alcohol content of what is traditionally quite a strong cocktail.

The chamomile tea gives the virgin cocktail a beautiful floral aroma and works really well with the other ingredients. The apple and lemon juice make this drink super refreshing while the fresh ginger is a less traditional ingredient but gives a spicy note to balance the sweetness of the apple.

Personally, I like both appletini versions a lot and find it hard to choose a favourite. But I would love to know what you think – so please let me know which one you prefer! Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker

Ingredients

  • 1 green apple (e.g. Granny Smith)
  • 2 cm ginger
  • 30 ml lemon juice
  • 15 ml simple syrup
  • 60 ml cloudy apple juice
  • 60 ml vodka
  • ice

Instructions

  • Cut a thin, circular slice from the apple and place it in a dish of water to stop it from oxidising. This is going to be the garnish.
  • Cut another 1/8 of the apple into small chunks and place the pieces in the shaker.
  • Peel the ginger and add it to the shaker.
  • Muddle the apple and ginger in the shaker. If you don't have a muddler, the back end of a wooden spoon or rolling pin work well too.
  • Top up the shaker with ice.
  • Pour in the lemon juice, simple syrup, apple juice and vodka.
  • Add the Boston glass (or lid) of your shaker and vigorously shake it for 20 to 30 seconds until your hands are icy cold.
  • Strain, quickly and with confidence, into a chilled martini glass.
  • Garnish with the round apple slice.

The Appletini is also delicious if you choose to switch the ginger to a with a small knob of turmeric…. You know… if you mistake it for ginger… Accidentally.
